We are not too far off from spring grass, and for many, the mild winter has grass started early. For those of you who have kept your horses up in the barn and runs while the weather was cold, be cautious about turning your horses out on spring growth pasture. We see too many good horses lost to founder every spring simply because they were turned out and left on strong pasture when their systems w...ere not able to cope with the sudden change in diet. I know good hay has been in short supply this year, and everyone who has growing pasture would like to take advantage of it. Starting with very short turnouts, and adding a little more time every few days for several weeks to allow your horse to adjust will save a lot of heartache.
