Renew Gold Expands Product Line to Dogs and Poultry
by Jennifer Walker
There are so many nutritional products on the market for horses these days, it can be difficult to determine which is best for your equine partner. Not only do you need to make sure you have the right balance of nutrients for your horse's needs, but you want high quality ingredients assembled with qualified research by people who know horses. Renew Gold was formulated by the California-based Phoenix Company two years ago for just this reason.
"It has always been clear that the market is driven by feed companies that have a vested interest in making feeds that are based on the least cost availability of commodity grains, soy hulls, and by-products," explains Win Wolcott of the Phoenix Company, which has been in business for over 20 years. "This was what was commonly available, and viewed as traditional, therefore that is what they used."
However, the makers of Renew Gold had another motivation. "We have always felt that conventional feeds were too high in starch," Wolcott continues. "The current low starch labeled feeds had less, but there is no real definition of 'low starch;' it is just a relative term. At recommended feeding rates, we feel that most low-starch feeds still provide too much for the digestive system to operate at its optimum level."
From there, the company took a unique approach to their research. "We decided to develop a product that considered the horse's digestive system from the mouth back," Wolcott explains. "We wanted to re-set the normal function of the whole system. No one has ever taken this approach before with a single base product. We wanted a pelleted product so there would be very little waste. It had to break down quickly and high in the digestive system, so the pellet needed to be very soft. We wanted an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory effect high in the system, but not in the hind gut. Then we wanted a normal, efficient hind gut without the roller-coaster effect of efficiency/inefficiency that is so common in most feeding programs. Starting from scratch with no pre-conceived notions or priorities on ingredients resulted in a product that met all these criteria."
One way Renew Gold reduces starch is by using stabilized rice bran as a base, a practice they pioneered in the equine industry. Stabilized rice bran is high in natural vegetable fat (18% to 20%), is a good source of fermentable fiber, and provides quality protein. This nutrient-rich and efficient formula also includes CoolStance® Coconut Meal, which provides the benefits of high quality protein, medium chain fatty acids, and digestible fiber while being extremely low in non-structural carbohydrates, and flax, a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids and an excellent source of vegetable fat and quality proteins.
With this highly effective combination, many horse owners find they need to feed less food and are able to cut out some of their expensive supplements, such as coat conditioners, hoof conditioners, and probiotics.
Now, Renew Gold is using the same passion for high quality and effective nutrition to expand their products to other animals. "The Renew Good Life dog food and the Renew Poultry Yard Mix were extensions of the unique approach to digestive efficiency that evolved from Renew Gold," Wolcott comments. "Obviously, the digestive systems are vastly different, but the inefficiency of conventional, least-cost formulations for these species by the feed industry in general is not. We feel that our specific, fixed formulations in these areas can benefit both our customers and our retail dealers. These products are unique in their categories."
Renew Good Life™ for dogs is made from chicken pork meal, plus other highly digestible and sustaining ingredients like coconut oil, stabilized rice bran, dried egg product, and flaxseed. Dogs on this formula tend to itch less and smell better.
As an added bonus, Renew Good Life smells better than most dog foods. "All conventional dog food pretty much smells the same, basically like rancid fat," Wolcott explains. "Renew Good Life smells very faintly of coconut. I have had an open bag of Good Life leaning up against my desk in my office for two months."
The same principles that make the Renew products good for dogs and horses makes it ideal for poultry as well. "Many people who are raising chickens to produce their own eggs are adding supplements to the diet to enhance egg production, Omega 3 levels, and shell integrity," Wolcott says. "Renew Omegga3 Yard Mix addresses all of these issues without the need of further supplementation. It contains flax and crushed oyster shell, and it is a micro sized pellet so there is no waste when feeding it."
The folks at the Phoenix Company seem to have the perfect balance of passion for what they do and the know-how to do it right. As a result, their customers know they're getting a product they can trust. "We are horse people," Wolcott says. "We raise them, start them, haul them, and show them. We feed our own horses every day, doctor them if they get hurt or sick, and cope with the same issues that our customer base does. Being a small company allows for this. The bean counters don't dictate what our products contain or how they are made. Our customers do. Most of the year, we try to close the office at 4:00 pm so the horses can be ridden before dark."
